Video: Lightning strikes Delta plane at Atlanta airport

Lightning struck a Delta Air Lines plane in line for takeoff at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport this week, and it was all captured on amateur video.

The recording shows rain drenching the airfield crowded with aircraft, waiting to take off from the world's busiest airport. The lightning strikes the plane 18 seconds into the 36-second video.

"While filming the line of planes all stacked up during a ground hold in Atlanta on 8/18/15 I happened to capture this direct lightning strike on a 737," wrote a YouTube poster by the name of Jack Perkins. He posted the video on Wednesday.

Delta spokesman Morgan Durrant confirmed that lightning struck Las Vegas-bound Delta Flight 67 on Tuesday, as the Boeing 737-900R aircraft was in the takeoff queue in Atlanta.

There were no reports of injuries among the 111 customers and six crew, Durrant said.

The plane took off nearly two hours late at 7:32 p.m. ET but landed only about 20 minutes later than scheduled, at 8:11 p.m. PT, according to FlightAware.com.
"As with any event involving aircraft, Delta is doing a thorough investigation of the circumstances around this flight as safety is always Delta's top priority," Durrant wrote in an email.


"Aircraft design allows lightning bolts to be safely redirected," Durrant wrote. "Fuselage structure and industrial-grade insulation acts as (a) super-conductive lightning rod that rechannels lightning around and away from customers and crew and out into the ground via the landing gear."

Planes are hit by lightning strikes more commonly than travelers probably realize and are designed with that in mind, commercial airline pilot and AskThePilot.com blogger Patrick Smith said.

"The energy does not travel through the cabin electrocuting the passengers; it is discharged overboard nine times in ten leaving little or no evidence of the strike itself," Smith wrote in his book, "Ask the Pilot: Everything You Need to Know About Air Travel."

Socrate Safo sacks workers and closes down his Movie Africa Studio due to ‘Dumsor’

                     Movie producer Socrate Safo has closed down his Movie Africa studio after 25 years of operation, due to bad power supply (dumsor), leaving five of his workers unemployed. His studio located in Accra Newtown has now been locked down temporarily, due to financial constraints.

On Thursday, he said;

“The power at Newtown is worrying us. There are times we are provided with light twice or once in a week during working hours. Again we depend a lot on the internet, so the internet goes off when the light is off. Vodafone also says they cannot buy fuel to power their machines to provide us with internet, so I do not get value for the Gh200 fee I pay monthly and there is nobody to complain to.”

The “Hot Fork” movie producer added that it doesn’t make economic sense to buy Gh50 fuel to power his generator everyday.

“I cannot keep buying fuel Gh50 everyday. How much do I pay my workers to be buying Gh50 fuel? It doesn’t make economic sense to continue. And just like the president said, a lot of smart businesses are expanding but I realise that I’m not smart so I’ve to close it down so that I will spend the rest I’ve saved with my family until God does a miracle for Ghana to get good leadership to restore the power. I’ve to sack all the guys I’ve employed away.”

Police confirm death of Ghanaian Times reporter in presidential press corps accident

The police have confirmed the death of a Ghanaian Times reporter in the presidential press corps accident which occurred at Doryumu junction in the Shai Hills area in Greater Accra on Thursday afternoon.

The Times reporter, Samuel Nuamah was said to have died on the spot, the Doryumu-Asutuare District Police Commander, ASP Stephen Addom confirmed this to Graphic Online’s Tema reporter, Benjamin Xornam Glover who has visited the accident scene.

A number of journalists assigned to the presidency who were on the accident vehicle sustained serious life-threatening injuries and have been taken to the hospital for medical care. They were initially taken to the Shai Hills Military Training School clinic and later transferred to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

The journalists were returning to Accra from Ho where President John Mahama had attended the annual convention of the Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Church.

Benjamin Xornam Glover reported that the police told him a total of 12 people were on the vehicle, a Ford GMC with registration number GB 506 – 12.

According to the police the left rear tyre of the vehicle burst and in an attempt to control the vehicle, the driver applied the brakes and the vehicle veered off the road.

President John Dramani Mahama and his entourage were not in the convoy.

Four others in critical condition

A statement issued by the Communications Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah late Thursday night said four of the injured  journalists were battling for their lives at the 37 Military Hospital.

They were named as Ghana Broadcasting Corporation’s Pascaline Adadevoh and Napoleon Ato Kittoe of GTV, Patrick Bida of the Enquirer and William Gyentu of Peace FM.

The deceased Nuamah left behind a wife and a daughter who are both based in the United States.

Last  Friday, 14th August, 2015,  a movie titled “Made In Agege” from Kumawood was premiered at the Silverbird Cinemas at the Accra Mall and West Hills Mall.

It was the first Kumawood movie ever to be premiered at a Silverbird Cinema and the anticipation to watch the movie was very high.

I would like to state that, I was not physically present at the premiere as I was in Nigeria for an event but 4 people from Ghbase.com attended the premiere and have informed me of what transpired. From all indications, the movie “Made In Agege” failed to attract movie lovers to come see the movie.

I am reliably told that, celebrities didn’t even turn up for the premiere at the West Hills Mall and the only notable celebrities present were Amanda Jissih of Ghone and Bill Asamoah. The movie was premiered twice that day at the West Hills Mall and the people who attended the first  premiere were about 65, sources have disclosed to me.

A vigilante group in Nima – a predominant Muslim community in Ghana’s capital, Accra, has flogged a man suspected to be gay.

The suspect received about 100 lashes from the vigilante group popularly known as Safety Empire. According to the group, its aim is to wage a crusade against homosexuality.

The man was whipped mercilessly when he allegedly tried to lure another resident into the controversial act. He was found guilty based on Sharia laws, the group said in a Facebook post.

Winnie & former President Nelson Mandela’s grandson arrested for raping a 15 year old girl

                                

Talk of disgrace and the destruction of a hardly built reputation of a family name. According to a report by the Daily Sun SA, the grandson of Winnie Mandela and former President Nelson Mandela appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on charges of the rape of a 15-year old girl in Greenside, South Africa. It’s alleged the teen was raped when she went to use the rest room in a restaurant and the boy grabbed and raped her inside one of the toilets.

The young man, who is in his 20s, cannot be named until he pleads guilty to the allegation leveled against him.

According to Daily Sun, the incident happened at a popular restaurant on Friday, August 14th. The boy’s grandmother Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s bodyguard intimidated the father of the rape victim when he initially tried to file a criminal charge against him, according to girl’s family spokesperson.

“Instead, Winnie’s bodyguard went to the family pretending to be a cop. The father was told there was no need to arrest the suspect but when the father asked to see his badge, he didn’t have one. It turned out he had been sent by Winnie” he said.

Jesus Of Zimbabwe Dies After 30 Days Of Fasting As He Seeks To Break Christ’s Record

                                           
ZIMBABWEAN self-styled messiah Khulu Reinfirst Manyuka has died from malnutrition after going without food for 30 days when he tried to emulate Jesus Christ and fast for 40 days and 40 nights.

Mr Manyuka, 73, left home on 15 June and headed into the bush to conduct prayers, redirecting his attention to God, away from things of the earth. He was known by his family and community at large as a very spiritual person whose faith could move mountains and his death has puzzled those close to him.

One close relative said: “He was a very spiritual man. It’s unfortunate he had to die this way.   “After a month we got the sad news of his death. He was a healthy and religious old man who did not even look his age.”

Attempting to equal or break Jesus Christ’s record of fasting for 40 days, Mr Manyuka gave up the ghost after just a month despite having no history of illness.

He was alone in the wilderness and his body was found by a stranger who then alerted the police.   According to the police, Mr Manyuka is not the first to die from fasting, as numerous other cases have been reported.

A police spokesman said that they are powerless, however, to prevent members of the public from fasting.

Fetish priest burnt alive

          

Blood-curdling youth of Kwapong in the Asunafo South District of the Brong-Ahafo Region on Friday vandalised the town’s police station and burnt alive a fetish priest who was in police custody.

In what looked like a movie scene, police personnel had to run for their lives until reinforcement arrived from nearby Goaso, Kenyasi and Mim.

The irate youth of Kwapong had stormed the police station to deliver instant justice to Efo Kwasi, a 27-year-old spiritualist who allegedly stabbed and killed one Kwaku Donkor, a tri-cyclist.

The police, as expected, arrested Efo and kept him in custody; but the youth numbering over 1000, inexplicably stormed the police station and demanded that the fetish priest be released to them.

In the ensuing confusion, one of the policemen reportedly fired warning shots to disperse the crowd and in the process, stray bullets hit one Kwame Wiafe, killing him instantly and also injuring another by name Kwame Kabore.

Incensed by the killing of their colleague, the youth then vandalised the police station, forcibly broke into the cell, pulled out the fetish priest and set him ablaze. He also died instantly.

According to sources, a misunderstanding had ensued between the fetish priest and Kwaku Donkor over the cost of carting some goods from Efo’s farm to the house.

In the heat of the confusion, Efo became annoyed and attacked Kwaku with a knife, killing him instantly; and that led to the mayhem in Kwapong.

The six police officers at the station were said to have fled and taken refuge at a nearby school and it was the reinforcement that brought the situation under control, even though the violence started about 6pm on Friday and continued till Saturday.

When DAILY GUIDE contacted the District Police Commander, DSP Simon Peter, he confirmed the incident but said he was not in the district, as he had travelled to Accra.

Later, the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Maxwell Atindane, told Joy FM that the fetish priest was arrested after a complaint was lodged with the police.

However, he said the youth in the area besieged the police station and started vandalising property, baying for the blood of the fetish priest; and when the police refused to hand over the fetish priest  to them and fired warning shots to disperse them, a stray bullet hit two of the agitating youth, killing one of them.
